| My name is Jon-Erich. Yes, it's my real first name, but as an artist, it's the only name I go by. I've been an artist since 2003, officially starting just a few months after I graduated from high school. I started out not knowing very much, but over the years, I've trained myself in various mediums of art. I've spent years working hard as an art student and now, even though I've spent almost 6 years at a community college, I'm hoping to take the skills I've learned over the years and do a lot more with them. I would also like to spend the next few years training myself in the types of art I haven't been able to get into over the last few years such as music. By nature, I'm not exactly what most would consider normal. I am a horror nerd. I like horror movies, video games, and music. I also have a fascination with things that many people may consider too morbid. My favorite holiday is of course Halloween. Much of this is reflected in my art. Despite how cartoonish I may seem, I do a have a semi-serious personality and I am very serious about what I do. Over the years, my art went from being very simplistic to becoming much more complex. When I first started out, I wasn't that talented and I didn't have a lot to work with, so I had to try and do a lot with very little. Nowadays I do a lot with...um..a lot, lol. Each art piece I post has a nicely detailed description of what exactly I make and how I make it. So, I hope whoever looks at my art enjoys it. Even though I make my art the way I want to, I still like to make other happy. I encourage anyone to say what's on their about my art. If you like it, tell me what you like and why. If you hate it, tell me why you hate my art. Or if there's a certain aspect of a piece you like and don't like tell me about it. I mean, I already know what I think about my own art, so it's always interesting to hear what other people have to say. Also, within the coming months, I'm hoping to start make art related buttons, stickers, and reproductions of my art pieces. It would be really helpful if I could get some opinions on what art piece of mine would be good for any of this. |
Anyway, the question you're asking me a very common question that I hear quite often from people. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most difficult to answer. I can spend all day telling you about the music I listen to, the movies I like to watch, what kind of subcultures I'm into, and and what my overall life is like, but honestly, there isn't a direct answer when it comes to inspiration. The reason for this is because when I work on a project, a lot of times I don't always think about the stuff I'm into, though I will admit, I do listen to music a lot while I work.
Now, there are a few examples of what I consider direct inspirations for my artwork. I can tell you that Untitled 2-2004 was directly inspired by the movie Kill Bill. Last Caress was inspired by the Misfits song of the same name. Teenage Necrophilia was inspired by some music I listen to and my former teenage co-workers and their attitudes towards girls. Eddie was inspired by Ed Gein, while the Eternal Midnight Sonata was directly influenced by the artwork from Ayami Kojima, who's famous for doing artwork for several video games in the Casltevania series.
Other than that, I can only guess. A lot of it is from my imagination and I can only guess that my life experiences help drive my imagination. Also, I guess it's just who I am as a person that shapes my artwork. Again, it's a very difficult question to answer because even I don't have an exact answer.
